Ike Matusow is one of the most respected poker players in the game today but has a habit of trash talking whilst sitting at the table and it is this that has earned him a nickname of The Mouth! Through this trait, he has several enemies amongst the regulars on the circuit that cannot wait to see him given a bad hand!
Matusow had been playing poker for years when he decided to give it try on a professional level. He made this decision in the 1990s, and at the time he was regularly being bankrolled to help him make the buy ins. As a result of that, he often does all he can to help fellow players out now. He actually started at the age of eighteen after discovering a video game but was soon hooked! However, this led to a gambling addiction a bit later on in life, especially when he began to steal from his parents.
Matusow’s best results have often come in the World Series of Poker, where he has won two bracelets to date. The first came in the 1999 $3,500 No Limit Hold ‘Em, and the second in the 2002 $5,000 Omaha Hi/Lo Split. It was in between those dates, in 2001, that Matusow actually achieved his highest place in the $10,000 No Limit Texas Hold ‘Em Main Event. He came sixth. He would also finish 9th in the same event in 2005. However, just after the 2005 tournament, Matusow won the WSOP Tournament of Champions, which earned him $1 million. However, Matusow actually won $333,333 in 1998 for doing absolutely nothing. He had lent Scott Nguyen the buy in for the Main Event and Nguyen want on to win it! He paid Matusow back for the loan and interest.
Matusow’s mouth brought him the headlines in the 22004 WSOP. He verbally attacked Greg Raymer, who would go on to win the event. This added Raymer to his list of enemies, and he was in good company there with Phil Helmuth, who had nothing but contempt for Matusow.
Matusow did achieve a measure of success on the World Poker Tour as well as the WSOP and actually won Poker Superstars III. He had several other final table finishes.
Matusow has had problems with drugs in the past but is now clean and playing as well as ever. As a result, he shows no sign of slowing up on the circuit just yet!
